Take a YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) stand in honor of Fair Housing Month at an after-work mixer presented by the Board and staff of the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center (GNOFHAC). This training for small landlords will cover your basic responsibilities under the federal Fair Housing Act and an overview of Louisiana landlord-tenant law including:
• Protected classes & transactions under the Fair Housing Act
• Reasonable modification and accommodation for people with disabilities
• Discriminatory harassment
• Creating advertisements that comply with fair housing law
• Leases & evictions
• Security deposits & repairs

There’s a new federal rule banning housing discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. We want to understand how housing discrimination affects LGBT individuals and families in New Orleans.
Please join the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center for a presentation about the new rule, followed by story circles to discuss the impact of housing discrimination on LGBT individuals in our community. We want to hear from you about your experiences!

Money Sense is Fair Housing University’s new financial management program. Participants will learn about savings, wealth building, credit and taxes, and have the opportunity to open a savings account with Hope Community Credit Union. The program also includes individual counseling sessions with GNOFHAC’s HUD-certified counselors. Money Sense is free (except for a one-time $20 credit report fee).

The Fair Housing Action Center has investigated a number of apartment complexes in recent years because of fair housing violations on the part of their management and maintenance staff. This half-day workshop will provide a comprehensive review of a housing provider’s responsibilities under fair housing law. Topics will include protected classes and transactions, reasonable modification and accommodation for people with disabilities, discriminatory harassment, and creating advertisements that comply with fair housing law. The training will also cover relevant landlord-tenant law including unit entry notification and maintenance responsibilities.

Special Issues in Representing Survivors of Domestic Violence (1.25 hours of Continuing Legal Education credit)
This Continuing Legal Education course will explore the intersections between the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) as it relates to representing survivors of domestic violence. Participants will examine HUD’s 1010 rule “HUD Programs: Violence Against Women Act Conforming Amendments” and 2011 memorandum “Assessing Claims of Housing Discrimination against Victims of Domestic Violence under the FHA and the VAWA” and learn skills and best practices from the Tulane Law School Domestic Violence Clinic.
